I offer copyediting, proofreading and translation services from Spanish into English. I can work with a variety of file formats including Word, PDF, Google Docs or LaTeX files.
If you’re unsure about which service you need, here’s what’s included:
Copyediting
The copyediting stage of a text takes place before typesetting and consists of:
- Checking spelling, grammar, punctuation
- Highlighting contradictions in the text
- Applying and following editorial house style or your preferred style
- Suggesting alternative word choices
- Highlighting overly long sentences/paragraphs, awkward/ambiguous sentence structures and suggesting edits
- Fact checking
- Tense correction
- Checking references
- Checking for inclusive and conscious language (if requested)
- Formatting (checking consistency in headings/quotations, removing double spaces, line breaks)
- Checking table/figure content against captions and text
- Alerting the client to possible plagiarism/legal issues
Proofreading
This is the final stage of editing before publication. Proofreading includes:
- Correcting grammar, spelling and punctuation
- Checking inconsistencies (capitalisation, hyphenation, UK/US spellings, etc)
- Typographical errors
- Formatting (removing double spaces, line breaks)
- Minor sentence editing for sense
I am familiar with a variety of referencing styles, e.g. Harvard, APA, Chicago, MLA, Vancouver.
How I work
I use track changes in Word and add any suggestions in comments (or direct edit and suggestions in Google Docs). I use sticky notes on PDF documents.
What I send back:
- Two files: a clean, edited version of your text and the track changes version with edits
- A detailed style sheet
